The Art of Simplicity

The more we think, the more we get carried away, the more we analyse. Complexity can be a time waster and most certainly an energy drainer.

“The greatest step towards a life of simplicity is to learn to let go.”
– Steve Maraboli

Complexity can also invade the Landscape design process. It feels so easy to start complicating things, to add too much detail and to over complicate design features. But complexity is far from easy, the design goes overboard and creates clutter, and worst case scenario clashes! Perhaps clashes in materials, perhaps even clashes in opinion!

Strip it all back and let go of wants and needs for a moment. With nature as our inspiration, simplicity can be an artistic masterpiece!

Try this exercise:

Use these basic questions below to contemplate. Write some points down after each one.

  1. Features you cannot live without
  2. Features you like but are not a necessity
  3. How you want the space to make you feel
  4. 2-3 colours you would like in the landscape
  5. Materials you like

Try to just have a few points for each question so not to over think it. Now anything you can’t make a decision on, write a trusty old pros and cons list to give you the yay or nay.

You should hopefully have a clearer view on your priorities, now is the time to contact your landscape designer for a consultation to discuss your ideas. The designer can then take your ideas, make more suggestions using their expertise, and get an even clearer view of where your new space is heading.
